The Easy Guide to Toasting Hazelnuts

shutterstock_154600607Want to make your own choc hazelnut spread, or just add a bit of crunch to your next slice? Hazelnuts are the answer, and the place to start is by toasting them. When toasted, hazelnuts have a more intense flavour. It's quite easy to toast your own hazelnuts for baking with.

Taste gave some tips on how to it yourself:

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Place the whole hazelnuts on a baking tray, spreading them out into a single layer.

2. Roast them for ten minutes until the skin has just started to crack and the nuts have turned a lightly toasted colour. They should also emit an aromatic smell.

3. Place the hazelnuts inside a clean tea towel and rub together roughly. This will remove the skins, which can sometimes taste bitter.

Once shelled, the hazelnuts can be sealed and stored for up to one month in a cool, dry place.
