Female Sommeliers Are Taking on the Wine Loving World

There is a growing trend in the wine world of Sydney, with a rising number of young female sommeliers offering their expertise to some of the city's finest restaurants and establishments.

The latest addition to the group is 23-year-old Julia Sewell, who for the last month has settled down to her night-time read of Rockpool Bar and Grill's 156-page wine list.

According to Daily Life, by stepping into her new role at the Hunter Street bar and grill, Sewell has access to an impressive cellar worth $6 million.

Michael Engelmann, who leads Rockpool's wine team said he always likes to have at least one woman on his team. He explained that women bring a certain sensitivity to their tasting, which can sometimes make them better at the job than men.

Another woman turning heads in Sydney cellars is 24-year-old Caitlyn Rees, who was recently appointed head sommelier at The Wine Library in Woollahra. Rees is also the founder of Sydney's first Women's Wine Society.
