The world's number one grape is cabernet sauvignon, with red grapes making up 55% of the world's wine. The title comes out of research by the University of Adelaide who surveyed the wine grape regions and varieties of 44 countries.
The university researchers said that their survey accounts for 99% of global wine production, and the information is now compiled in a massive database. It is said to be the first world-wide database on wine-grape varieties and regions.
Professor Kym Anderson, who was behind the study, believes the database will be a useful tool for producers all over the world and has the capacity to cause a boost in competitiveness.
Wine producers will also be able to use the information to adapt to climate change by seeing how well certain varieties perform in different regions. With temperatures expected to change somewhat significantly, producers are offered a glimpse into the future to see how their grapes will perform under a different climate.
The research confirms the gradual shift from white wine to red wine.
