Bar H: Paving the Way to a New Style of Sydney Dining

7Sydney may have a fantastic range of fine-dining restaurants, but when it comes to mid-range good cuisine worth talking about, it has always somewhat lacked. However, according to reviewer Pat Nourse, things could finally be looking up for Sydneysiders who love good food but not the price tag.

In recent months, a number of mid-range restaurants and cafes have been popping up, giving Sydney residents a taste of affordable fine food. Surry Hills restaurant Assiette has been redesigned as a more casual and accessible restaurant and Duke is a fabulous bistro located above the Flinders Hotel.

Sydney is most certainly seeing a fresh wave of exciting restaurants that are choosing to cater to the average Australian and leading the way in the revolution is Bar H, an Italian-style bar where the H stands for Hamish Ingham.

Ingham has been a chef on the radar of Australian foodies for some time, having headed the Billy Kwong kitchen for many years. He has also spent time working with California-based chef Alice Waters at Chez Panisse and it's clear in his food that there is a little bit of influence from both Waters and Kwong.

Bar H is by no means pretentious, but the quality of food is outstanding. The ambience is electric and while the seats aren't that comfortable, it's ok because you know that's not what Bar H is about. It's about meeting friends for a few drinks and trying some mouth-watering food from a top-quality chef, without having to pay the hefty price tag.

Ingham is setting the standard of feeding you well, rather than showing off technique.
